Product Description This renowned reference book has served scholars, pastors, students, and those interested in the background of the New Testament for years. The insight given into the Essene community, the destruction of Jerusalem and the interpretations and traditions of the Old Testament in first century Judaism is invaluable. The outlook of Josephus, a late first century Pharisee and historian, on Jesus and the New Testament documents is enlightening and provocative. As an original reference, The Works of Josephus is essential to a full understanding of the first century, the time of Christ and the New Testament. Complete and unabridged, this is the best one-volume edition of the classic translation of JosephusÂ’ works. The entire text has been reset in modern, easy-to-read type; numbering corresponding to that used in the Loeb edition has been added to the text; and citations and cross-references have been updated from Roman numerals to Arabic numbers. Good for those intersted in improving their knowledge of history for Bible Study
Rating:
This book compiles the complete Works of Josephus including, Life of Flavius Josephus, War of the Jew, Antiquities of the Jews, Against Apion, and Discourse to the Greeks, all in one book. It is convenient to have it all together in one book, but it is big and heavy at 800 pages. I learned about this book in my bible study class, and it has been a good resource for understanding the time period of the life of Jesus better. If you do not know who he was, Josephus was a Jewish historian and a Pharissee during the 1st Century AD. It has useful cross-references and citations. The book Antiquities is the only one in this that delves into the Old Testament. He was considered by some a traitor for his work for the Romans, who sacked Jerusalem just 70 years after the the death of Jesus. So you have to keep that conflict in mind as you read his works. But he is honest about the internal fighting of the Jews.
Dry read, but informative

I use it more as a reference book to look up specific events. I don't have the fortitude to read it end to end. Interesting, nonetheless.
Must Have Resource
Rating:
One of the best resources that I have found outside of the Bible that contains accurate historical data. Josephus was a Jewish historian within the first century. This is a great historical resource to use in your biblical studies or apologetic reasoning's. The purpose of this is to provide further evidence for what we know as true, but it will not bring someone to Christ alone.
If you are just reading for a historical viewpoint, it is one of the best you'll find around.
